Around 1700 BC, the Babylonians had invented an ancient air-conditioning system that used wind poles installed on the roof to use natural wind from the outside to pass through the cold water and blow into the room, making the people inside feel cool. In the 19th century, British scientist and inventor Michael Faraday (Michael Faraday) discovered that compressing and liquefying a certain gas can freeze air. This phenomenon occurs when liquefied ammonia vapor evaporates. At that time, his ideas were still theoretical.
In 1842, the Florida doctor John Gorrie built a new building in compression with a central wall-mounted split air conditioner. An engineer from Hoboken, New Jersey, Alfred Wolff, assisted in the design of this new air conditioning system and moved the technology from a textile factory to a commercial building. He is considered one of the pioneers in making the working environment cooler.
